From Broadcast to Narrowcast ?
In a fragmented world, trust becomes a growth strategy

I've been thinking a lot recently about whether businesses are asking the wrong question. For years the focus has been on reach.
· How many people saw it?
· How many followers do we have?
· How much traffic came to the web page
· How many leads, sales did we generate?
Reach still matters, of course. But I'm convinced that relevance matters more.
Most organisations don't need everybody to know who they are. They need the right people to know who they are, understand what they stand for and trust them enough to act. That's a very different challenge.
People no longer consume information in the same way. We choose our own channels, communities, commentators and brands. We curate what we pay attention to.
As audiences fragment, influence fragments too.
And so it follows then, that this means growth is becoming less about broadcasting messages and more about building relationships. Less "How many people can we reach?" …more "Who matters most?"
o Customers.
o Future customers.
o Employees.
o Partners.
o Investors.
o Advocates.
o Communities.
The answer will be different for every organisation, but the principle is the same. When you know who matters most, you can create communications, products, services and experiences that are relevant to them. Edelman’s Trust Barometer 2025 called this permission space. Identify the space that (only) you can authentically and credibly own with your audience and build a relationship around it.
That's where trust starts. And trust has value. Not in the abstract. Real commercial value.
Trusted organisations attract customers more easily. They retain them for longer. They benefit from recommendation. They recover more quickly when things go wrong. Trust influences decisions every day, whether people realise it or not.
Which is why I find myself talking less about communications in isolation and more about reputation, behaviour and business strategy. And why joining up and integration is ever more critical.
Most people don't wake up thinking about your latest campaign.
· They notice whether you do what you said you would do.
· Whether your values feel genuine.
· Whether their experience matches your messaging.
· Whether you'd be worth recommending to someone else.
That's reputation. And increasingly, that's linked to growth.
The organisations that prosper over the next decade won't necessarily be those with the biggest marketing budgets or the loudest voices.
I suspect they'll be the organisations that understand their audiences best, build meaningful relationships and earn trust consistently over time.
Because in a fragmented world, trust isn't simply the outcome. It's becoming the underlying essential strategy.
